College Prep prepares students to make a positive difference, encouraging engagement in a full array of school activities, and in service and learning opportunities in the broader world. We foster an understanding of interdependence and stewardship that starts with care for our open-air Oakland campus and extends to our greater community.
The Common Classroom offerings rotate weekly. Teachers, students, and alumni lead activities, classes, and workshops across a range of ever-changing offerings that include art projects, political discussions, physical pursuits, and more. Students are encouraged to try new things, meet new people in the community, and host their own Common Classroom on a topic they are passionate about! Showing up for one another as engaged leaders and participants builds the active, dynamic, diverse learning opportunities that are at core of the Common Classroom.
Common Classroom
Common Classroom is a weekly rotating set of engaging, ungraded learning opportunities. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni lead activities, classes, and workshops across a range of ever-changing offerings that include art projects, political discussions, physical pursuits, and more.
Retreats
Each grade has an annual overnight retreat. Before the school year begins, the ninth grade trip creates social connections and ensures a smooth entry into the College Prep community. Tenth graders go rafting and camping with programming that focuses on self-esteem and decision-making. Eleventh graders explore leadership and teamwork by engaging physically and mentally at an outdoor ropes course. The twelfth grade retreat occurs just prior to graduation and offers time to reflect on College Prep memories and friendships.
Community-Based Learning
College Prep cultivates lifelong learners and engaged citizens through connections to Oakland and the greater Bay Area. There are many opportunities for students to learn practical skills while working towards social and environmental justice within their communities.
The East Bay, with its abundant green spaces, rich legacy of community organizing, and vibrant diversity offers myriad chances to deepen classroom curriculum through experiences in the world beyond College Prep. Students plan and implement a wide variety of advocacy campaigns, fundraisers, and service opportunities.
