Advising & Student Support

Deep learning requires patience, creativity, reflection, and practice. College Prep faculty are available to support individual students’ learning and emotional needs throughout their high school journey.
Offerings are designed around themes such as identity, equity, belonging, decision making, self-advocacy, and self-care. Students grow through the development of academic and life skills along with an awareness of the sustaining power of community.

9th grade transition to College Prep

The Connections and Advising Program (CAP) supports all ninth grade students as they transition to high school through weekly small-group sessions led by faculty advisors and senior student mentors. In addition to academic advising and group connection, CAP focuses on equity and belonging and social emotional growth. CAP groups build belonging through innovative learning experiences that foster meaningful connections and guide students to navigate life with purpose. These groups also explore ethical questions, self-care, service in the community, and the best ways to cultivate and maintain relationships.

advising

Tenth through twelfth grade students are grouped in mixed-grade advisories where they remain through graduation. Advising meetings provide an opportunity for students to share advice, discuss courses, and support one another. Juniors and seniors continue to receive academic guidance while offering advice and support to younger students. Throughout the school year students also meet one-on-one with their advisor.

Wellness and Belonging

Wellness & Belonging is a program for tenth and eleventh graders. It begins by examining systems of oppression as they intersect with race, class, gender, and sexuality. Through mental health, physical health, and sexual health education, students learn more about themselves, each other, and the communities within which their identities exist. In eleventh grade, students consider a variety of historical movements as they pertain to disability justice, gender justice, queer justice, and racial justice while building their drive for social action and change. Throughout this course, students utilize different learning modalities such as case studies, activities, videos, and group discussions to build understanding of wellness as it exists within the self and the larger community.

counseling

Counseling and health education are key components of the school’s comprehensive support structures. The school’s full-time counselor is available to students, parents, faculty, and staff for brief counseling, referrals, and consultation. The counselor meets individually with all ninth graders and transfer students as part of their transition to College Prep. Students may self-refer to counseling or be referred by teachers, administrators, advisors, or parents.

learning center

The Learning Center is a dedicated space in the heart of campus where students can get support from two full-time subject specialists through one-on-one consultations, workshops, and peer tutoring. The Director of Learning Services provides support for students with study skills, time management, organization, and stress reduction. The Math and Science Learning Specialist provides one-on-one and group support in STEM classes. The Learning Center is available to all students, including those with learning plans and those without. You can read more here.

peer tutors

College Prep has peer tutoring programs in math, science, writing, and world languages. Faculty mentors train dedicated eleventh and twelfth graders who offer one-on-one meetings and group workshops throughout the year to other students. Mentors help their peers prepare for tests, review homework problems, and reinforce new concepts from class.
