Connections, Pride, and Spirit (CPS) Day!

Connections Pride and Spirit Day is an annual event where students immerse themselves into a theme. This year, our focus was Environmental and Climate Justice. Hosted by our Dean of Equity and Belonging, Alexandria Osei-Amoako, and a coalition of student leaders, the day's activities are led by community organizers, students, and teachers.

"Climate justice" is a movement that acknowledges how climate change can have differing social, economic, public health, and other adverse impacts on underprivileged populations. Environmental and climate justice is a civil rights issue.

Our keynote speaker was Teju Adisa-Farrar, an environmental equity consultant and speaker. She centers climate, racial, and distributive justice by sharing ideas on regenerative practices and co-collaborative design. Teju’s lens includes sustainable fiber and fashion systems, urban ecologies, nature, history, activism and art.

Our closing speaker, Dahni-El Giles, led our students through a climate simulation. Dahni-El is passionate about addressing the climate crisis, promoting regenerative business, protecting the environment, and creating opportunities for others.

Workshops focused on factory farming, urban gardening, market based climate policy, clean drinking water, community organizing strategies, indigenous Water Protectors, voting rights, fast fashion, examining consumption, private utilities, food waste, California's Climate Change Plan, dispossession of indigenous land, and the Yurok tribe's land management practices.

Here's a sneak peek into the day.
